Petrified Forest National Park, AZ

Petrified Forest National Park, AZ

We left Bluewater Lake State Park a couple days ago, but it wasn't without issues. Due to the rain, snow and freezing weather, we had some issues getting out: I forgot to preheat the diesel engine, so it didn't want to start. It was in the mid 20's overnight.Due to the cold and playing the radio all week, the motorhome starting battery was very low and went dead almost immediately. The trickle cha...

Playing Tourists in New Mexico, Part 3

Caballo State Park, NM

After leaving Elephant Butte State Park, we headed to the Volunteer Travel Campsites (32.3774, -106.4913) located on the White Sands Missile Range (Army Post). This is a small, 8-site RV Park located on the main portion of the Army post. It's very quiet here, with wonderful views of the Organ Mountains. A pretty good deal for only $10 a night with full hook-ups. It's located between Las Cruces and...

September 2005 Travel Log

9/30: Lake George Escape Camping Resort: Just 9 days left here and we'll start moving again! These past few days were spent with some doctor appointments, and cleaning. The Jeep and motorhome both got a very thorough cleaning. Unlike other workampers here, we didn't get much sap from the pine trees. It felt pretty good to not have any schedule to stick to. We could sleep in and do what we wanted, ...

Playing Tourists in New Mexico, Part 5

El Malpais National Munument, NM

Last Monday, March 25th, we decided to move up north to Bluewater Lake State Park. We knew it was a risk with the weather, but we were looking for new scenery and new adventures. This State Park only has 14 sites with electric, but another 130+ sites without electric. It was a gamble that paid off. Being early-season, the state park was almost empty. There were only a few electric sites taken...

November 2005 Travel Log

11/30/05: Mary Esther, FL: The other day, we had a "Boomer" fix! Bob and Nancy Colbert are friends we've met through the Escapee Boomers group. They noticed we were in Florida and they were passing this way. We met them for Brunch the other day and caught up on what we've each been doing. Seems they won't be going to Quartzsite this winter either. It's always great meeting old and new friends on t...

2002 Travel Log

December 2002: 12/14 - 12/15: Just a short weekend at our nearby Usery Mountain Recreation Park in Mesa, AZ. This is a nice, quiet county park with wonderful desert views. The park had a short Christmas program at night, with Cowboy poetry and a 1 mile trail lit with Luminaries. We just relaxed all weekend, playing "The Golf Ball Game" and reading. I plan to write a short article on this fun game,...

2003 Travel Log

Boondocking in the White Mountains, AZ

November 2003: <11/21 - 11/23: Again, we had a strong desire to "get away" for the weekend. The weather has cooled off around Phoenix, so we headed to our favorite desert boondocking spot. This spot is is only about 50 miles from home, yet in an isolated area. We spent the weekend just relaxing, taking walks, playing cards and reading. We also enjoyed a nice scenic drive through the desert, but...

September 2004 Travel Log

9/30: We've met up with 9 other Boomer families and are now parked at the Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. We're parked right on the edge of the primary landing area for the balloons with our huge front window facing the landing area. Although there were a few hot air balloons flying this morning, the scheduled events don't start until tomorrow evening. We'll attend "chase crew school" tomorrow...

October 2004 Travel Log

10/29: Well, we're homeless now. Our "wheel estate" has been placed into short-term storage. We packed up a selection of clothes and emptied the fridge and freezer and now we're staying with Connie's parents in Torrance, CA until our plane leaves on Monday. They treated us to a nice dinner out for Connie's birthday. We've rented a small motorhome in Australia and will tour the Southeast corner for...
