Glacier National Park, MT

Lake McDonald Lodge

After leaving the Rexford Bench USFS Campground near Eureka, MT, we headed to the Sundance RV Park in Coram, MT. Even at $45 a night, it was one of the least expensive RV parks near the west entrance to Glacier National Park. Not a great RV Park, but it worked fine for our needs. We were only a few miles from the West side of Glacier National Park. The famous "Going to the Sun" road wasn't yet open, but they expected to have it open at the end of the week. We had reserved a week here and saw as much as we could. Without taking a hike or bike ride into the wilderness, or going out on the lakes, there's only so much you can see at Glacier NP. There's not a lot of roads.

Bear Grass

We could drive the Going to the Sun road for about 14 miles from the West park entrance. We drove along Lake McDonald, stopping at the historical lodge for lunch. Along the 14 mile drive, we followed McDonald Creek with a few waterfalls. Another day drive took us further north to the small historical town of Polebridge. This small town is very isolated, but does a booming business with tourists. Their freshly bakes pastries came highly recommended, unfortunately they were out of the recommended huckleberry bars, but we still came away with a few goodies. The drive there and back was beautiful, and the history of this small town was interesting.

Glacier Distillery Tasting Flight
Two Medicine Falls

Since we were paid for 7 days in Coram, we made the 90 minute day drive to the Eastern portion of Glacier National Park. Our first idea was to see what we could and skip moving the RV over there. But then they announced that the Going to the Sun Road would open on June 22nd. So we made a day trip to the East side and only visited an area known as "Two Medicine". We took a short hike to the Two Medicine waterfall, which was pretty neat. During our day trip, we checked out possible places to move the motorhome to. We couldn't fit into the FS park campgrounds and the commercial RV parks in the area were asking over $50 a night. However, we found numerous fishing access areas along the rivers that would make good dry-camping locations. We learned that 3 days of camping was allowed at these fishing access points.

While staying in Coram, we also visited the Hungry Horse Dam and the Glacier Distillery. This local distillery had some good tasting flights. Of course, Connie couldn't pass up purchasing a bottle of their Huckleberry Gin.

Slot Canyon
Bear Creek Fishing Access

After our week in Coram, we moved to a real nice fishing access outside of the town of Essex. We enjoyed our 3 days there, parked right along the rushing waters of Bear Creek. While there, we waited for Saturday, June 22nd to go drive the Going to the Sun road from the East entrance. it was scheduled to be opened this day. We got the park, but they decided not to open the road yet. A little disappointed, we were able to drive another 14 miles of the road from the East entrance. This was a more scenic drive than coming in from the West entrance. We enjoyed another short hike to Baring Falls. We especially liked an area with a small slot canyon. Overall, very scenic. We enjoyed our trip to Glacier National Park, We did drive 30 miles of the Going to the Sun Road. We just missed the middle 15 miles worth.

Yesterday, we left the Glacier National Park area and continued our journey East. There was a sudden change in the terrain as soon as we got past the east side of Glacier. Until now, our short trip into Montana had all been mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and heavy forest. Now the scenery changed to miles of green rolling hills of grass and grains. This was the terrain that gave Montana the slogan "Big Sky Country". We enjoyed almost no traffic with a slight breeze giving the green fields a waving motion. We reached our destination for this leg of the trip in the afternoon.

Our initial plans to stay 4 nights at the Malmstrom AFB FamCamp near Great Falls changed to staying 5 nights. We arrived and were assigned our site. However, the RV site was already taken. The host wasn't aware that the RV Park was already full. They let us dry-camp for the night in the parking lot and we moved into our site this morning. Since we had already paid for 4 nights, we'll just start our 4 nights today.
